报告内容提示:

Charge carrier transport, which is central to the performance of organic-based devices, was shown to be strongly affected by localized electronic gap states originating from structural imperfections, impurities and/or chemical interactions with the gaseous environment. Detailed investigations of gap states energy distribution are therefore of paramount importance to understand the energy level alignment at interfaces and the intrinsic limits of transport in organic semiconductors. We use ultrahigh-sensitivity ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), which was developed at Chiba University, to demonstrate that even exposure to seemingly innocuous inert gases such as N2 and Ar can have a significant impact on the electronic properties of pentacene films.

In this talk we will introduce our recent innovative studies on low density-of-states in the band gap, which are induced by weak physical perturbations, using ultrahigh-sensitivity UPS. The results are of fundamental importance for a better understanding of the nature of organic semiconductors, but are also of high practical importance, given that current processing steps in organic electronics always include exposure to inert, e.g. N2, atmosphere. If time is available, we will also discuss other topics in relation to the nature of organic semiconductors, namely band dispersion, electron-phonon coupling for the study of charge mobility.
